An Epitaph To A 300 Year Old Queen Poem by Dawne Wirth

An Epitaph To A 300 Year Old Queen

A copper queen and a silver prince stood proudly together
They had reigned through many storms.
Although the queen was older by 200 years,
She had stood majestic in her youth and prime.
 But her reign had been a lonely one;
She had seen many suitors come and go,
There had been none truly to stand by her side.

Fortune shone upon her life in the form of a silver prince,
Who weathered all those that challenged her regal form.
Their love caused them to intertwine and grow close together,
But her heart became hollow from internal sorrow.
Her prince tried to support her with his sturdy boughs,
Though his efforts were sadly in vain
And could not contain her colossal weight.

One fateful night when an ill wind blew,
A young man returning from a good night out,
Was unfortunate to walk beneath her might.
When calamity struck him down;
For her heart had finally given out
And one of her boughs struck him upon his head,
Knocking him straight down to the ground.

The young man survived, and badly bled;
But not so for the queen and prince,
For it was decreed that their reign was finally over.
And so with heavy heart and roaring saws,
The tree fellers took them away, but
It is said that their beauty may well live on
In the form of tables and chairs.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem came about because there was a beautiful copper beech tree that fell down in the town where I live. I've always loved trees, especially the big ones. I then was told of a young man who was nearly killed by this tree, I was so touched by the story, that I decided to write a poem about it. I wrote it in August 2013 in just about one sitting although I did adjust it several times there after. I hope you enjoy it.
