An Injured Visitor Poem by rashmi pradeep kumar

An Injured Visitor

A parrot was found on
Our football field,
They said, her wing
Was badly injured.

She was carried to
Our Biology Lab,
Where we nestled her near the window
In a cardboard box filled with mud.

A beaker full of water
Was placed near her,
But not a drop
Did she touch.

Instead, she looked
Forlornly out of the window,
Thinking of the happy
Bygone days, with her friends.

Suddenly, she jumped
On to the window sill,
From where she had a wonderful view
Of the ground below.

She looked beseechingly at us
And blinked her eyes,
Down she jumped again
Twitching her tail a little.

When we crowded around her
She became frightened,
And made curious noises
In her slender throat.

She eyed an open window
Very close to her,
Made a surprising dart
And out of it she flew.

We watched with mouths agape
The bird, which was said
To be ‘injured’,
Had just flown away.

She turned and looked at me
Winked her eye and
Gave a sharp crackle, as if to say, -
“I’ve fooled you all ! ! ”
