I have known pain
The prick of a needle
And the ache of a tooth
I have known pain
The sting of a bee
And the breaking of a bone
I have known pain
And it was tolerable
And you were here
I have known pain
A cigarette burn
And a cut from a knife
I have known pain
A splinter in your hand
And a sun burn at the lake
I thought I'd known pain
But he was a stranger in passing
And you were here
Now I know pain
It is a quiet apartment
And a made bed because I sleep on the couch
Now I know pain
It is a hard truth
And a dozen lies we tell ourselves each day
And you were here
You would always be here
Until you weren't
