Another Civilization - Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

Here
Another civilization
Here
In the cemetery
There is silence
A small lark in
The first light sings.
The rest is white light;
Silence.

    This is simply and thoroughly beautiful. It is a peaceful acceptance of mortality, on the biggest scale and the smallest. The other civilization of the title is Land of the Dead which you honor in a dignified way, without panic or special pleading. But you DO honor the dead, you remember them so that they are not bereft. This in itself is one of our basic human duties - to keep intact the human family. You have also written very personal poems of dead love ones which express your keen loss. This poem speaks in another voice - universal, ethical, compassionate; it is impersonal because it speaks for all persons, not just for self. It is the voice of our better nature. (Report) Reply
