Anything Except Me Poem by Clare Walsh

Anything Except Me

I want to be a movie star
I want to be a singer
I want to be a teacher
I want to be anything except me
I feel like I'm drowning in this mind and body that imprisons me
Sometimes I feel as if sleep is the only option that would benefit me
Life is hard, life is tough
Life is unbearable
I wonder if I ended it
Would I be missed
Or would I be dissed
For ending it this way?

Reading this poem brought back memories of when I was 14 years old. I had feelings similar to yours. It is a time that will go on living inside you. As Wordsworth said, The child is father to the man. Since then I've learned that pain is a sign of capacity to feel deeply. Looking back, I'm glad I had that capacity. Life is a test and you have to pass through the abyss with fortitude, because the rewards are great. The rewards can be distilled into poems.
