Appetite for Great Poetry
I read such and such contemporary poems
by this and that poet but none came out greater
than the few I read numerous decades past.
Writing well takes an extraordinarily good
original author and I have seen none as of
yesterday.
Well, maybe the day before or after
Writing good poetry takes a good writer
and a boundless inventiveness to satisfy a mind
that is often integral to the reader reading about
a subject springing out of the box. The success of
the jack in the box is the cause of its success.
It is the unexpected appearance that does
the magic. And so it must with good poetry.
The words must slap and sizzle and smell
without losing their dignity. As a matter of fact
sign language poetry ought to become if not a hit
then at least a fad of extremely short duration.
