By violence signed and washed clean like grace,
I have awakened to light revealing names and stations
where an Adam lived in innocent nakedness
stricken with the throbbing grandeur of a paradise.
I have understood the language of tides,
the days of shadows, birds held captive by the sky,
and seen things hidden in the noon-day sun
dancing behind a veil, thrice holy,
seductive and unreachable, like an unknown star.
But water has seared my bones drunk with creation,
and always in the darkness of its winks
light uncovers the flesh of intellect,
and I behold a bloodless virgin in my arms,
raped in the blinding brightness of a God.
