Be Thankful Poem by Francis Duggan

Be Thankful

Every day you wake to see
The welcome light of day
Happy indeed you should be
That you've not been death's prey.

Be thankful you are healthy
And feel glad you're overground
Better be poor than sick and wealthy
With death chasing you around.

Oh it is nice to hear
The glossy blackbird sing
On a morning brisk and clear
In the Season of Spring

To hear a skylark singing
A sweet melody on high
It's pleasant notes a ringing
Through an early morning sky.

Oh how nice it is to see
The little lambs at play
Frolicking round the fields in glee
On a sunny April day.

To watch a duck and drake
Wing their way to spend the night
In a little mountain lake
Where they can rest in quiet

Humans know so little joy
And happiness few seem to know
Ask me not the reason why
The answer to it I don't know?

Most humans crave for power
Great riches they desire
But life can also sour
On the plutocrat and squire.

But if you can stand awhile
Listening to a blackbird sing
And each day manage a smile
Then it's you have everything.
