Behind Closed Doors Poem by Lacie Hebert

Behind Closed Doors

I know my heart should know better,
I know the line I shouldn't cross,
But feelings don't follow warnings,
And they don't count the cost.

Every time you look my way,
The world begins to fade,
I forget the reasons why
I should be afraid.

I tell myself to walk away,
To let the distance grow,
But every road I try to take
Somehow leads back to you.

We are a secret written softly,
A story no one knows,
A flame we keep protecting
That only burns when hidden close.

I know there are promises around you,
A life you've already made,
And I know the choices we are making
Can leave behind a blade.

Still, when you're beside me,
The loneliness disappears,
For a moment all the doubts I carry
Become quiet and unclear.

But love should never need a shadow,
Or hide from morning light.
A heart can want what hurts it,
And still know wrong from right.

So maybe I will miss you,
Maybe I will always care,
But some loves are meant to teach us
Not every love is ours to share.

Because holding onto someone
Can sometimes mean letting go,
Even when your heart is begging
For the one it wants the most.
