Dust On My Boots Poem by Lacie Hebert

Dust On My Boots

You rolled into town like a warning sign,
With a crooked grin and a borrowed shine.
A beat-up truck and a restless past,
A kind of love that never lasts.

You spoke in promises sweet and slow,
Like you meant forever, but I'd come to know
Forever was just something you said, Before you left me there instead.

We drove those roads where the gravel sings,
Where broken hearts still drag their strings.
I thought I was something you'd never lose,
But I was just dust on your boots.

You came and went like changing weather,
Swore that we were bound together. But binding ties don't break so fast, Unless they were never meant to last.

Mama warned me from the start,
That boys like you don't give their heart.
They give you fire, they give you flame, Then leave you standing in the rain.

Now I look back and finally see,
You were never really loving me.
Just passing time, just passing through,
Like dust that clings and fades from view.
