Benjamin Poem by Adrian Wait

Benjamin

The bounce before you are beckoned
Animates the trust cradled in your hesitancy
"Is it…is it… did he say ‘show-me, …is it'
Tilting your head to beckon more words
Your eyes watch every flicker in my face
Urging another flicker…the action word
Confirmation gesture, I rub my hands together
The eyes fixed upon my every movement
Unlock your coiled spring of joy. And,
When the smile leaves my eyes
You explode with joy, mouthing
Limiting your bark, transfixed…
Nose unhesitatingly points, third draw
On the right, "What…what", I say…
Milking every expectant moment
Again I say, "Shall we have a look"
Your ears pinned back, your eyes…
Your eyes look at me, then the draw
Then my eyes… ‘Hurry up' unspoken…
You are so overjoyed, ten thousand times
Repeated over the years, yet your joy, timeless
I love you Ben and I miss you as you miss me
At our home tonight…

Benjamin, Rueben, Ben…
