Bested By Two Pigeons Poem by Lone Dog

Bested By Two Pigeons

One morning,
I was rudely awakened
By the cooing of pigeons
On the ledge of a neighboring building.
The amorous tone of their murmurings
Soon sparked my interest, though,
So I sleepily parted the drapes
To observe whatever ritual
They were engaged in.
There they were, two of them,
Strutting excitedly in reversing circles
And repeatedly touching each other's beaks
With their own -
An action that certainly would only be risked
By pigeons that were soul mates.
Then, to my astonishment, each pigeon quieted
And gently rested its head
On the shoulder of the other.
What a touching expression
Of love and affection between these two birds!
It was so human-like!

Suddenly, a feeling of depression swept over me
And I slumped back on the bed in despair.
These two lowly pigeons were engaged
In the kind of loving relationship
That I, in my lifetime,
Have never been able to achieve.
