Betrayal Poem by Brian Hairbottle

Betrayal

The fight is over, the war is lost - betrayed by many a foreign politician
who gave them the right to meddle without reasonable solution,
Did we not fight and sacrifice for them in times past?
when they did cry for help, so fast,
yet, now in our time of need, turned against us and sided with the foe
no concern or care that their actions would steal from us, lay us low.

Bravely we fought, men and women both white and black
courage and honour amongst us did not lack,
we were fighting the world for survival
our fierceness knew no bounds, amongst others we had no rival,
their small minds of betrayal could not bend our iron will
no matter how hard they tried our fighting spirit would not be still.
There was no such thing as surrender
if we could, to a man we would fight forever,
our gallant leader Ian Douglas Smith faced many woes
as he met with those who had now turned from friends to foes,
England and Harold Wilson played with our lives as if a game
that we had come to their aid in time of need - they had no shame,
England for all the deceit practiced with monotony
did not to lose this valuable colony,
so in bitter vengeance, with bitter malice
did they drink deeply of the corruption chalice.

America - far over the sea, with their own form of prejudice
as usual - unable to confine themselves to their own affairs did roll the dice,
taking a chance to meddle in another country's fight
Carter, Nixon and Ford their will to impose on us but will not do it in their own, they flex their might,
'Democracy' hey cry, there must be democracy, there must be equality
BUT, where is the equality in their own land, look at the American Indian - such hypocrisy,
Both England and America have much to answer for
in their dealings, interference, treachery and back-stabbing in our war.

For what did we fight?
With all our ability and might,
For what did so many pay the ultimate sacrifice? ?
brothers and sisters, bearing arms or in innocence, did this not suffice? ?
But to give our land to our enemies who are no better than a barbarian
not a sign of sense, wisdom or ability to behave as a humanitarian,
this EVIL that was aided, assisted and abetted to invade our homeland
will one day find that their ilk will no longer be a merry band,
for as we did in our time of need and of dire support
the same foul deeds in heaps will by others purport.
Do NOT cry for your country
for you get your deserved and just bounty.

Some may be able to forgive but none can ever forget
the betrayal that against us was by a few beget,
driven by circumstance and malicious intent from our homes
to lands far and wide, of customs strange and odd - a dread comes,
will our homes and country ever be restored, so that by grace
our way of life and culture so rare and unique, we might again face.
