Bottle Blues Poem by Brian Hairbottle

Bottle Blues

Another day is dawning as the sun rises
yet another day of torment to face
My head aches, my eyes hurt
My body is cold and stiff
as I crawl from the dark place

To go back, or to be seen
is sure to end and start with a beating
WHO will listen to me?
who will believe my tale I have to tell?
Without telling me to go to hell

See, there is a man with a bottle
will he give me a little?
Or will he to beat me and cast me aside?
ALL l want is to dim my day
to make it more passable

Soon the warm glow of the booze
warms my body and dulls my mind, as l let it loose
Throughout the day, I can say
please sir, another bottle
I need to soothe my need today.

I need another bottle for the night
it gives me strength and might
To face whatever may come my way
but do not let anything delay
The merciful bliss that I consider my right
