Bird In A Cage Poem by Patricia Kelley

Bird In A Cage

I do feel her.
I can put my hand on her.
And I can feel a flutter.
She's in her cage flying around.
When I sing, she quickly moves around.
When she sees that I'm hurt,
She feels deep pain.
She stands on her guarded caged perch.
And with one sigh,
She takes one breath,
And she stupors,
She freezes,
And then, she lets it go.
I can't stop her.
The words that come out of her, she sings to free the other birds.
She's very protected and guarded.
But every once in awhile, something opens the cage.
Or it finds its way in,
It can happen when she thinks of someone close and dear.
It can happen when she wishes someone was near.
She tries very hard to protect its vulnerability.
She puts layers of clothes on.
She's put her hand over her chest.
But, whatever she does, there's always someone that finds their way into her ribbed cage.
