Blue Planet Blues Poem by Sheena Blackhall

Blue Planet Blues

Rating: 5.0

The waves roll in
The waves roll out

Each year eight million tonnes of plastic
Thrown in the sea pollute the deep
Poisonous, ugly, deadening and caustic

The waves roll in.
The waves roll out

The wide seas swallow the world's trash
From plastic bags to pesticides -
Swirl in Pacific's Garbage Patch

The waves roll in
The waves roll out

Cigarettes, bottles, drown in the spray
Cutlery, straws, toothbrushes, cans
500 hundred years to melt away

The waves roll in
The waves roll out

Cotton buds and fishing net
Frisbees, trays, old rope and string
Child's balloon, all a human threat

The waves roll in
The waves roll out

Toothpicks swim where the blue whale sings
Seals and dolphins, albatross
Turtles throttled on six pack rings

The waves roll in
The waves roll out

Oil spills, toxins, sewage waste
Fertilizer cause eutrophication
Dead zones of coral…Man, make haste
To stop the tidal soup of pollution

The waves roll in.
The waves roll out

Sheena, this is a superb poem on a subject close to my heart. Your refrain reminds me of a poem by Paul Valery and is very effective. La mer, la mer, toujours recommencee.. The sea, the sea always recommencing! The destruction of coral is particularly terrible.
