Boredom Poem by Shrutika Nagpal

Boredom

You gnaw at my consciousness
Force me into drowsiness
You slowly drug me
And make me sleepy
You, manipulative boredom,
Why in the world did you come?

You pull my eye lids down
In the sea of dreams you make me drown
You enter my mind with all your might
Though with sleepiness I cannot fight.
You degrade my concentration
With your renowned skill: Penetration.

You make my vision hazy
Make simple problems mazy
Make me feel tired and lazy
Make my focus go crazy
Why are you doing this to me?
You sleep provoking Genie!

As I sit in class
Studying, so with flying colors I can pass
My head suddenly falls into my hands:
Not one lecturer understands
That I’m not responsible,
That I’m not accusable

For the crime of putting me to sleep
That it is you who tries to keep
Me far from reality
To intentionally distract me
So that rationalism disappears
And subconscious, so appealing, appears.

Of course I must confess:
Sleep, I willingly caress
As it is the one time I can forget everything
The one time I don’t have to do anything
But, here’s a request, my friend,
Stop trying to put my waking hours to an end
