Born Free Poem by Maria Shaw

Born Free

I was born to a world of love
embraced in protective arms
nurtured and kept from harm.

I was born to a world of discord
I had a brief moment of freedom
I searched my soul for a reason.

I was born to a world of hostility
brother and sister we all have a mother
why can't we live in unity.

I was born to a world of corruption
I fought for salvation
armed with compassion.

I lay in my mother's arms
a bullet in my heart
I was born to tears of joy
I died to tears of pain.

Perhaps I lived my life in vain
but now I'm free, once again,
I tried to make a difference
my existence reflected resistance.
