Brave In The Extreme Poem by Francis Duggan

Brave In The Extreme

Your cause is worth fighting for but not for it to die
To say any different would be a lie
Sacrificing and losing your life for any cause may be seen as brave in the extreme
But otherwise rather foolhardy is how it does seem
Today they are honoured and remembered with pride
The brave fighting under their Country's flag who in foreign fields died
Though the odds stacked against them they refused to retreat
And they fell under gunfire in a noble defeat
But what did they die for in fields far away?
These noble young men who are remembered today
Most of them did not have the chance to father children since they were so young
And not of much use to them today if their praises are sung
It was their government sent them far from home to die
In their fight for freedom which was based on a lie.
