Brexit Poem by Tony Ogunlowo

Brexit

My wife wants a divorce
Or so she thinks.
Why? Ask I.
I thought we were happy the way we were.
She wants to be more independent, replies she.
Aren't you independent enough? Ask I.
No! Replies she.

So I agree to a divorce,
But she needs time to work out what she wants.
Okay, reply I,
Take all the time you need
but remember
once we're done, we're done
and there will be no going back.

So she takes her time
and comes back with a list of what she wants.
She wants the cats, the dogs, the kids, the house
And even me - but in the background!
Aren't you asking for too much, ask I
because if you take everything and me
we aren't really divorcing are we?

But it'll be a divorce, says she and I'll be more independent.
