But For You, Messiah. Poem by Tayo Bamgbose

But For You, Messiah.

BUT 4 YOU, MESSIAH

I used to think, heaven was so far away
And only came down in church on Sunday
I was confused,
And I stood accused
Condemnation and guilt filled my heart everyday
Where could I run to
Who could I turn to
A prisoner of sin
All I did was hurt you
I thought there was no hope for me
Deep down I was longing to be free

But for You, Messiah
If not for You, Deliverer
Who came from heaven, down
To wash my sins, turn my life around
I would have no destiny
I would be lost eternally
Thank You, thank You, Jesus

I give You praise, Messiah
Thank You for Your grace, Deliverer
For teaching me to know
The way to go
And how to say no…
Thank You, thank You, Jesus

Till You picked me
From the miry clay
And set my feet upon the rock to stay
I was a sinner
But I thought I was a winner
Cause I fooled everybody with my hypocrisy
I was in church
But I was out of touch
With the living Saviour
My Creator
I played religion
But I had no connection
To the Father and the Son
It was all pretension
I thought there was no hope for me
Deep down, I was longing to be free

But for You, Messiah
If not for You, Deliverer
Who came from heaven, down
To wash my sins, turn my life around
I would have no destiny
I would be lost eternally
Thank You, thank You, Jesus

I give You praise, Messiah
Thank You for Your grace, Deliverer
For teaching me to know
The way to go
And how to say no…
Thank you thank you, Jesus.

You were wounded for my transgressions
Bruised for my iniquities
The chastisement for my peace
Was laid upon You
By Your stripes I am healed
When I believed in You
You broke the chains, freed my soul and became my shield
Jesus, my Good Shepherd
By your voice I am ushered
To fulfil the Father's will
In spite of how I feel
You give me the power
To keep my body under
To arise and shine and be a light
Everyday and every night
Once I was blind but now I see
Once I was bound but now I'm free

But for You, Messiah
If not for You, Deliverer
Who came from heaven down
To wash my sins, turn my life around
I would have no destiny
I would be lost eternally
Thank You, thank You, Jesus

I give You praise, Messiah
Thank You for Your grace, Deliverer
For teaching me to know
The way to go
And how to say no.

No, no, no.
To anger
To pride
To slander
To strife
To covetousness
To lasciviousness
To temptation
To corruption
No, no, no.

You also teach me to say yes.
Yes, yes, yes.
To Your voice
To Your choice
To Your Spirit
To innocence
To diligence
To sincerity
To honesty
To Your wisdon
To Your kingdom
Yes, yes, BUT 4 YOU, MESSIAH
