By The Teteriv Poem by Margaret O Driscoll

By The Teteriv

At Zhytomyr's river beach in early Summer bathers dive into the cooling Teteriv
A youth snorkels for crayfish
Children happily make sandcastles while parents relax nearby
Boisterous teens play volleyball barefoot on warm sand

Upriver I watch two anglers flick out long lines with flashy lures attached
Smoke drifts from a barbeque
I stroll along the riverside to cross to Gagarin Park on the opposite bank
Bungee jumpers scream on their first descent from the high suspension bridge

Next day at the nature reserve where the Teteriv meets the Dnipro
A white-tailed eagle swoops down onto the water with a huge splash
A brief struggle - then it flaps it's huge wings to take off
A big silvery fish gripped in it's fierce talons, it flies off to waiting chicks
