C For Coccineus

A palm-sized black O
painted on a not-much bigger piece
of flat metal painted cream
is placed before, behind,
amongst, above or beside
the plant in its prime
in my garden.

On March 23
the O stands before
the 18 red flowers
of Haemanthus C,
from the family Amaryllis,
a nymph in poems Latin and Greek;
a neglected but apt moniker
for a baby she
born downunder
round March 23.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Greek nymph Amaryllis showed her love for a shepherd named Alteo, who wasn't interested, by pricking herself around the heart outside his door once a day. After 30 days he finally opened the door to find spectacular red flowers had sprung up from her blood.
