Can I? - Poem by Correina MacRae

As the sun sets
behind the hills tonight,
I look back on the last
four years of my life.

My heart stands
one final test,
after this it
can finally rest.

Can I stand alone
without needing your
hand to hold?
I hope so because
this game is getting old.

Can I to you say, “Good-bye”
and have strength enough
not to cry?
I have to because you
no longer want me
by your side.

I loved you once upon a time,
now I’m just tired of your
excuses and your lies.
I’d apologize but there’s
nothing to be sorry for,
because by doing this
both of us can move on
with our lives once more.
