We can surely agree human beings need both kindness and power lavished on them, but we cannot achieve our highest aspirations however much we might hope to. Prayer illustrates this dramatically: we pray to God to give us what we cannot acquire by our native strength. But even prayer is limited: it doesn't fulfill what we want, unless God wills it. At this moment I am listening to Mussorgsky's KHOVANSHCHINA about the Old Believers who died rather than submitting to Czar Peter. I'm listening to their leader Dosifei telling them to prepare for the ultimate sacrifice and they respond in the softest tones of faith. I can admire their courage while another part of me deplores their mass suicide.
