Chauvinism? Poem by Andrew Soglo

Chauvinism?

CHAUVINISM?
Wait!
Wait, for you can't renovate the building.
Why Sir?
Among this group, men do not inherit matrilineally -
I mean you cannot benefit from your mother's lineage.
But it is from my father's genealogy?
Notwithstanding!
Your father's mother is my father's sister.
You mean my paternal grandmother is your paternal aunt?
Ehen! And your grandmother- your father's mother
Is the younger sister of my father.
And both bear the same family name.
But your father, whose mother bears
The same last name of my father, does not have
The same surname as your paternal grandmother.
Your father's family name is different from his mother's.
Therefore?
No inheritance from her lineage for your father
And that means there is no inheritance for YOU?

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Andrew Soglo 03 August 2017

Growing up among the patriarchal/patrilineal system among the Ewes, I was struck by the comment made by one of my kinsmen to the effect that I could not refurbish my paternal grandfather's dilapidated building. That was how the poem came about. More comments later.
