Chief Legislator Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

Chief Legislator

Chief Legislator
Lubumba!

What are the heavy rains of fire?
What are the little bells that ring outside the hospital?

Chief Lubumba
He goes out when the snow begins to fall.

What are the turquoise specters, chief Lubumba?

The hair that became white before its age?

The parliament just sits; chief Lubumba speaks.

Both Orator and Legislator blows his breath
Like a whirlwind; all stand still; but shiver.

Is Chief Lubumba then in every one of us?

We admire Chief Lubumba secretly; and with him are in love - silently.

The words of the Law became at least in part Anti-Laws.

And Chief Lubumba he stands; he smiles sardonically.
