Childhood Poem by Doreen Maphosa

Childhood

A figment of my imagination
Where did you go?
They adulterized me
They cheated me.,
And you left.
Oh, great love.
Oh, sweet innocence.
Did we at one point meet?
Did we at one point be?
I have no recollections.,
I can't look back, the darkness saddens me.,
Carefree, they put the weight of the world on my shoulders.
Bubbly, they made me an outcast.
Intelligent, they cheated me of what I could have been.
Lovely, they killed me.
A light, they extinguished the fire in me.,
My growth, stunted.,
Me., un-me.,
We never were.,
They made it.
Oh great love.,
Oh sweet innocence.,
Why were we never were?
