Conceptual Miscalculation Poem by David Thomas

Conceptual Miscalculation

things way when...
they were so easy
so free
so left up to me,
come and go as you please
all of the innocence of the rye
sat wildly inside of my soul.

nearly twenty years later
the world's gone haywire,
people in the planes they go crashing down
places in the world go burning down
the safe secure old world
is not polluted i'm too sure,
there's something to be done
but the answer has escaped us like oil
from bp,
whatcha gonna do?
you lose some you win some,
is this what has to happen
for people to gain a clue?

i remember the day
that i fell in love with the purest girl,
she's not perfect, no,
but before me she was...
something always happens
to the people who hold the light,
to make them doubt life
and potentially shadow their beacons,
i was her something
and she overcame me...
but what of the rest of the world?
surely she's not the only one,
what happened to all the light
wherever has it gone?
all i see are shadows
and they are creeping everywhere,
something's gotta change...
somethin's gotta change.
