Conservatory Poem by Edwin Hopper

Conservatory

OH MY GOD! LOVE, YOU'VE GOT COLD FEET,
AND YOU'VE TAKEN THE WHOLE DAMNED SHEET.

Your beauty's still extraordinary.
Your hair was dark as a star lit night.
Your parents were out, we thought we might...
Go into your Dad's conservatory.

FREEZING OUT OF BED. COME ON KIDS GET UP.
YOUR TOOTHBRUSH SHOULD BE IN YOUR TOOTH CUP.

The Sun in your dad's conservatory.
All alone with the one I adore.
You and I on the mat on the floor.
Naked in your Dad's conservatory.

IS THAT THE TIME? IT SAYS SO ON RADIO FOUR.
TOAST, CORNFLAKES, COFFEE. I'LL POUR.

It was so hot in the conservatory.
Our trials in loves laboratory.
Driving our passion to certainty.
Our love in your Dad's conservatory.

WHERE ARE YOUR GLOVES? , YOU'RE IN THE SCHOOL PLAY,
AND YOU'LL NEED THAT, COS IT'S SPORTS DAY.

That warm, wonderful conservatory.
Kiss you everywhere, no need to hurry.
Finger and tongue. You tasted of curry.
That day in your Dad's Conservatory.

THAT'S NOT SCHOOL UNIFORM. SHOES AREN'T CLEAN.
TELL MUM I'LL SCRAPE ICE OFF THE WINDSCREEN.

And... remember that conservatory.
You astride me. Your triumphant smile.
When we lay panting like dogs run a mile.
Sweating in your Dad's conservatory.

BELTS ON? START... CAN'T AFFORD NEW BATTERY.
OH GOOD... LOVE, WHEN WE WIN THE LOTTERY,
I'M BUILDING OUR OWN CONSERVATORY.
