Consolation In The Darkness Poem by James Fredenburg

Consolation In The Darkness

As evening fell
on a cold and windy day
stars bravely twinkled
in a faraway darkening sky
and clouds hung like a wreath
around a pale crescent moon.

I was missing you again
and as I stood alone
I felt your presence
sitting in the old rocking chair.

You told me
to just remember
the good times
we shared together
because the good times
are all we can keep
when we go to Heaven.

I felt you smile
when you told me
to remember the home runs
and forget the strikeouts.

The house was silent
and the night peaceful
when you said goodbye
and promised me
you would always be there
and I would never be alone.
