Cosmic Chaos: A Love Story Poem by Tor Magnor Solvang

Cosmic Chaos: A Love Story

High above the clouds and space debris,
Where gravity acts like a bad third wheel,
A glowing rock and a gas giant see
Each other and wonder: Is this really real?

The Moon winks coyly, two light-seconds away,
While Jupiter flexes his red spot with pride.
'I like 'em big, ' does the cratered orb say,
As twenty-odd moons try and shove it aside.

Saturn looks on with his rings in a twist,
Jealous of Jupiter's absolute mass.
'You're just a giant with permanent mist! '
He yells, burning green with a greenhouse gas.

Black Holes are vacuuming up the applause,
And Pluto's just glad to be in the chat,
Ignoring the planetary bylaws,
Wondering where they all left their hat.

Then Pluto rolls up in a beat-up old ship,
Screaming, 'Hey guys, did you miss me or what? '
But Neptune just gives him a freezing-cold lip,
And kicks him right out of the orbit slot.

'You're not even a planet! ' the gas giants jeer,
As Pluto sits sobbing out
in the cold,
With Charon his buddy to buy him a beer,
And complain that the universe is getting too old.

Then Earth logs on, full of drama and tears,
Screaming, 'You're dating him?
Look at his girth!
I gave you some water, some life, and your years,
You'll never find anyone better than Earth!

'But the Sun wakes up with a blinding white glare,
Yawning away all the gossiping stars,
'Turn down the gravity! Clear out the air! '
As he shines a bright light on Venus and Mars.

The party is over, the orbits resume,
The lovers drift back to their cold, lonely space,
Leaving poor Earth in a climate of gloom,
With the Sun shining right
in everyone's face.

So cosmic romance is a chaotic mess,
From the smallest of rocks to the hottest of spheres,
They pull and they push in a dance of distress,
Just ghosting each other for billions of years.
