Covid-19 - Poem by Loke Kok yee

A bustling city in an ancient land
Calamity fell, brought by nature's hand
In a market wet, a pestilence brewed
Insidious, unseen, a pandemic flu
Mysterious, unknown, through the province fanned
A catastrophe that destiny planned
The contagion spread while anxiety grew
In due course they found, ‘twas a virus new
The nation rallied, took a common stand
Together they fought for the motherland
Through illness and death with all that they knew
Till the deadly foe grudgingly withdrew

The rest of the world, some with bigotry
Went on a campaign of mean calumny
A Chinese virus! They were to decry
Trumping up fake news, they kept up the lie
Far away countries, well over the sea
Felt securely safe and from the blight; free
When it hit their shores, were left high and dry
Unready to cope, leaving some to die
Religious conclaves, proved a tragedy
Transmission ran wild, a death recipe
Benumbed and confused, not knowing the why
When it fades away, what lessons belie?

A heavenly trial or Darwin's views conveyed
Nature's changing course or God's fury displayed
From whence the ills came, believers or unswayed
The message reads clear, Mankind again had strayed
