Cruel Widow Poem by Robert Smith

Cruel Widow

o widow! what is it you mourn?
is it the man? or labor borne?
the loss of love? or yea the past?
perhaps that beauty cannot last?

wherefore do you shake and moan?
your loss of youth or child grown?
for all the things you'll never own
that echo through your hollow home?

in life admit you shunned the man
who offered love and took your hand
and yielded to each cruel demand
yet only now you understand

A fascinating poem. As Jayatissa observed, there may be many different reasons for the widow's actions. You have presented your case the way you understand it. Many things to think about here!

Thank you Kim, please read my feedback below, I would share the same with you. I think the poem was presented from a single point of view - and I have to admit I felt that the speaker was perhaps a touch mean spirited or callous under the circumstances. Or perhaps he or she was just being realistic. But as I said I felt very uncomfortable publishing it until now, but thanks to your feedback and Jayatissa's feedback I feel much better about it. :)

Mourning widow may have many reasons to do so. An outsider may view this from a perspective of his/her own. Picture painted by the poem sounds a real life situation. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much Jayatissa for your feedback. It isn't about a single, real life situation, I'm very happy to say. But I have known many people who are unkind to their spouses, and I took all of their situations to their collective logical conclusion. I think I was just pondering if they love their spouses and not know how to show it? Or in the end do they mourn their own personal loss because they have lost the one person who was willing to put up with their misbehavior? Do they have any right to mourn at all? Is each situation different, or are they fundamentally the same? And how is it we can be cruel to those closest to us? It was written to invite discussion, but I didn't publish it for a long time because I didn't know how it would be received. Your feedback makes me very happy that I did.
