Crumbs From Their Tables Poem by Raymond Farrell

Crumbs From Their Tables

Rating: 4.0

When most had a common goal
Shared a common set of values
Dreamed of the same future
Were willing to pitch in
To help make it happen
Shoulder the load
Without questioning and complaining
It was then
The idea of democracy
Looked as though
It might come to pass
The bones of thought
Would at last over time
Be fleshed out
But now in our complacency
Far too many
Have ceased to feel responsible
Using their vote
To put into office
Politicians who will give them
What they want
After they have taken it
From someone else
The constant toil and vigilance
Needed to maintain
What others have died for
Is foreign to a people
Obsessed with getting
What they can from government
The whole scheme is crumbling
Under the weight of debt
And bloated government
Meanwhile corrupt politicians
Bought and paid for by special interests
Periodically let a few crumbs
Fall from their tables
To try and make the sheeple believe
They are looking after their interests.
