Culture Or Lack Of Such Poem by Tor Magnor Solvang

Culture Or Lack Of Such

The days are long, the snow falls deep,
In this new land, secrets to keep.
My heart remembers Norway's way,
Of visits short, to brighten the day.

Here, the doors swing open wide,
Family's close, right by your side.
Children call, they come and stay,
Live less than fifteen minutes away.

Back home, a few hours was the plan,
A friendly chat, then on you ran.
Weeks would pass, a pleasant space,
Each visit found its proper place.

A home is home, a quiet nest,
Where personal time is truly blessed.
This constant flow, it feels so new,
A different rhythm, through and through.

I nod and smile, I try to learn,
But still my inner self does yearn
For quiet moments, peace to find,
A much better culture, in my selfish mind.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My final stanza highlights a painful truth about immigration. Even when you 'nod and smile' to assimilate, your fundamental psychological needs—shaped by your mother culture—do not easily change.
