'Dates Without Destiny' Poem by Pushpinder Kaur

'Dates Without Destiny'

Dates without Destiny

Loads and loads of
scrumptious, savoury, succulent
Dates
The Pride of the country,
symbolic of the National Heritage-
Dates,
That embellish the arid and dusty roads of
the Desert country,
The U.A.E-
(Though no longer a desert country
Rather, a Desert Oasis now
A Greenwood Oasis…
An Emerald Oasis…)
Seem to step on Oblivion

The nation's blessing-
The Dates-
Seem to have a
Destiny
uncharted, unbridled, unchecked
Dates-
Once, the staple food of the Bedouin
The life source and the fountain of life,
Once a vital necessity
Are now a trampled accessory…

Dates…now
Face a pathetic plight
When fallen on the ground
Scattered unceremoniously,
Inharmoniously and unseemly.

Dates…
The once priceless Fountain of life
Must need be
Honoured, preserved and saved
In time

Such is the Call.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Having been a resident of the UAE for 30 years, admiring the natural vegetation of the desert country, it seems a major concern to see the yearly produce of dates falling on the ground and going waste. Something which is grown at a huge expense, both in terms of human labour and money, needs to be preserved more honourably.
