Deaf To The World Poem by Tony Sandy

Deaf To The World

Rating: 5.0

My life is a stream of consciousness, wherein I drown in a sea of imagery.
I am a camera that flows over the world without sense or censorship.
No sound acts as a full stop on my endeavours.
I am not disturbed by noise or distracted by voices.
My existence is a solitary pursuit through the realms of vision.
I see the dumb show of those that speak as if engaged in a game of charades.
They laugh at monkeys but we see them as no different (great apes) .
They call us slow because we cannot speak clearly in their tongue.
We laugh behind our hands as our fingers do the (rapid) talking.
The world is blind to our existence and we are deaf to its.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My brothers wife is deaf and my wife is hard of hearing (narrow ear canals) , so this flowed from that knowledge and reading an Oliver Sacks book dealing with the subject

Thanks for the Poet's Notes. I like (esp.) : 'sense or censorship'. I think I'd opt to give up the realms of sound IF I could keep 'the realms of vision'.

I blame part of my not-so-great hearing on 'narrow ear canals'; I have my wife dredge them every few months.

Re your use of 'dumb', I usually think of 'dumb' as meaning 'stupid' or 'ignorant' though 'dumb' also means 'deaf'.

Great apes and monkeys are both primates, but there are several ways to tell them apart: Tails: Apes do not have tails, but monkeys do. Apes have tailbones as a remnant of their lost tails. Size: Great apes are generally larger than monkeys.

Without the Poet's Notes, this poem's meaning might elude some (many?) readers. Did I say 'Welcome to PoemHunter'?

Though I find the following line at least EXAGGERATED in its factuality (ok, I made up that word) , I DO LIKE THE LINE: '
