Desert Days Poem by Paul Warren

Desert Days

It was days before they missed me
In the desert whilst the hot wind blew so free
Our track which was seldom used in those days
The rough track ruined the car in so many ways

The Sun beat down and we waited hoping for the best
And what was left for us was a mess
As we contemplated what to do
As the sun and the desert beat on us all through

That night there was a strange bright glow
That stretched from the south and lessened after an hour or so
The next day we saw a dust cloud coming towards us
And when the approaching vehicle stopped we made a fuss

But the news they brought shocked us so
And made us wonder to where we'd go
For the nuclear mushrooms bloomed over the cities
Blowing them away to dust was such a pity

So we wander these dusty tracks
As we survive driving through the Australian Outback
For there is no where left to go
As we wait and wonder as our fates last show.
