Did You Hear?

Did You Hear?

by Mary Naylor

Did you hear about Iran, how they protested in the streets,

Roaring, down with dictators and make way for the free!

Did you hear they set fire to trash bins,

And braved tear gas, and that cars honked to support them.

When freedom comes to being, if only for a heartbeat,

Bells in the soul, toll, and fireworks explode, extolling the feat.

Thus, all join the timeless voices of every dialect and creed,

As they together stand, for at least a moment, on holy Liberty's Street!

Did you hear how the police grabbed a young boy,

Let him go, the crowd shouted, and the police were annoyed,

But they let him go, to the crowds great joy,

Because they just weren't taking it anymore!

Did you hear how the police attacked dormitories and homes,

Did you hear how some people cried and others groaned,

But they all shouted, go ahead, break down our doors,

Because, we're just not taking it anymore!

When freedom comes to being, if only for a heartbeat,

Bells in the soul, toll, and fireworks explode, extolling the feat.

Thus, all join the timeless voices of every dialect and creed,

As they together stand, for at least a moment, on holy Liberty's Street!
