Distantly Poem by Jade Leven

Distantly

I wish I could smile and look up at you
but I only sigh and look down at my feet
so many times we’ve talked, so many worlds we’ve walked
just to stand here in the heat
of a day when we could’ve sworn the rain would fall
and there’s nowhere that I’ve been that I recall
it’s the only day in a new lifetime for me
I just want to love you distantly

here’s a moment I can’t stand to look at you
but the end refuses to fall into place
we used to lie down on our backs
and pretend the world was flat
and let ourselves fall into space
but there’s no need to stand around
or at least no reason I have found
and though I love your eyes and their eternity
I have to love you distantly

I wish I could remember every detail
but by tomorrow this will be so far away
and the secret I will keep
is that I love to fall asleep
with you on my mind, and wake up that way
in my dreams I’d climb the clouds until I reach the sun
so this never-ending story has begun
only for you I’d swim the deepest sea
but what if I loved you distantly

if only you could find me within your starry night
if only I could get this puzzle right
I think you’d find a piece of yourself in me
and I don’t think I could ever love you
distantly
