Do Cats Have A Heaven? Poem by Steve Harris

Do Cats Have A Heaven?

Do cats have a heaven?
I like to think they do

I like to think it's a big garden with fences and trees to climb
high enough to win at cat chess…
…but low enough not to need the Fire Brigade

There will be mice in the garden that don't quite run fast enough
And birds that fly low and slow
And ponds full of big fish that can never quite be caught

There won't be a Rainbow Bridge or anything soppy like that
Just a big soft cushion under every tree
And every cat can be the tiger they've always wanted to be

When its my time, I hope I'll be allowed to go and find my friends
They won't be waiting eagerly for me at the gate - they're not dogs
And I know they won't have missed me as much as I've missed them

But they won't be too far away
Just far enough to make me work to find them
And when I do, they'll look at me as if to say 'Oh, it's you'

But I wouldn't want to be anywhere else

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
One of our cats had just been diagnosed with an inoperable stomach tumour and this poem just appeared in my head - I suppose it was my way of dealing with the news.
