Dont Try - Poem by sam scott

they want the friend who is always there for them, but never needs them to be there for her
they want the friend who knows how to let them be there for her
they want the daughter who does what she is told just because she is told to do it
they want someone who understands reason
they want the friend who will tell them they are right even when they are wrong
they want someone who will always tell the truth
they want the sister who does not argue or complain
they want someone who can speak up for herself
they want the student who cares more about school than life
they want the quiet neighbor who's life revolves around watching their kids
they want someone who knows how to have a good time
they want a girl who does not drink or smoke or listen to music too loud
they want a girl who drinks and smokes and blasts her music
they want someone who will always listen but never speak
they want someone who will always speak when they are ready to listen
they want someone who wants to stay here
they want someone who does not feel like crying 24/7
they want someone who does not worry about everyone all the time
they want someone who is always looking out for everyone else
they want someone who does not over-think everything
they want a person who thinks before she acts
they want a person who sees bad but still believes in good
they want a person that i do not know how to be

i have tried to be this person.
it is exhausting, extremely stressful, utterly overwhelming, severely depressing, and highly impossible.
but who else am i supposed to be?
