Double Eulogy Poem by moon batchelder

Double Eulogy

a hesitation blurred her former confident demeanor,
as tho some dark foreboding 'rose, a haunting deep inside her.
a loathsome onus wove a lattice, daunting as a spider
unto her prey attending; while as yet it hasn't seen her.

she rose to the occasion, tho her legs beneath her trembled.
and strode up to the podium that stood before the altar
unfolding notes she wrote the night before, lest words should falter
unsteadily her gaze perused the people who'd assembled.

her voice seemed foreign to herself, the eulogy unbidden;
allowed in mute acknowledgement of doom that went unspoken.
then bowing low to kiss cold lips, her own heart, softly broken
was now with grace endowed to face the truth she once had hidden.

that destination common to us all would soon befall her
and briefer eulogies would be recited by another.
the thief that even lately had bereaved her of her mother
stood boldly at the threshhold. soon, they knew, that he would call her.
