Down Poem by Emmanuel Stone

Down

You know you're down when you dance with shadows
and drink with memories and still don't feel alive.

And when the sun won't make the birds sing
will you think the worst has arrived?
Run now, frightened one, into your home,
the robbers are coming out to roam.
They'll laugh and sing at your misfortune
and steal all that remains of you,
so pull the sheets tighter over your head
and think not of the shadows and memories
in whose presence you supped last night.

And when the danger has passed away
enter the world, be not afraid!
Your companion, fear, has run away.
Now dare not to dance with shadows
or drink with memories
let merely the absence of pain and fear
and a clean world be all
to make you feel divine.
