Drifting Sunset Poem by Ryan Coody

Drifting Sunset

I will miss you when he steals you away
namely: manhunt, smores, camping fires highlighted with the darkness of a cloudy night...
It made us dependent on each other's laughter to break the silence of sky and sound
so like the sun
that is born and dies in the same day
lets mark our death with a sunset
a sight so magnificent, only God can be credited with the beauty
an eruption powerful enough to abduct your breath
and leave you gasping for air so your mind can process the sight

You reminded me that sometimes what I love wasn't enough.
Only you were enough.
Sometimes music just wouldn't cut it
food and water wasn't all my body needed to survive
shelter didn't keep out all my destructive thoughts
and when my mind tried to rampage
in spite of my tired spirit, and tried to push my sunken bones out of my cold skin,
you weren't there to break down my thoughts like complex chemicals in a lab
into simpler elements
the building blocks of consolation.
A human without purpose is past useless,
it's working actively against itself.
When you marked me I thought it was because I was special
But it was just an expiration date, and our feelings have turned.

I can only focus in one direction.
I was working my way up to you like the moon.
You faded into a crescent.
But I didn't notice you were leaving because all I could see was how beautiful that piece of you was.
And I just stared at that slice, while you faded.
I didn't realize you were eroding until you went completely dark. Then I understood that crescent had been my last hope.
You were gone.
Without knowing where to go I just pushed myself into the empty sky
to d r i f t

My mind is still drifting
too far gone to give up,
but no where
surrounded by nothing
relying on chance and no one else, to make it back to where i was.

So like the sun
that is born and dies in the same day
lets mark our death with a sunset
a sight so magnificent, only God can be credited with the beauty
an eruption powerful enough to abduct your breath
and leave you gasping for air so your mind can process the sight.
