Eat Your Greens Blues Poem by Billy Henderson

Eat Your Greens Blues

1. My mama done tol’ me, when I was just five,
“You don’t eat healthy, you don’t survive”,
She’d twist my ear sayin’, “One thing’s for cert,
Don’t eat your artichoke you, get no dessert”.

Chorus
I got the ‘eat your greens’ blues, I got the ‘eat your greens’ blues
I got the ‘eat your greens’ blues, I got the ‘eat your greens’ blues
I just heard it on the news, I just heard it on the news
I got the ‘eat your greens’ blues, I got the ‘eat your greens’ blues
Oh I ain’t like one of youz, Oh I ain’t like one of youz
I got the ‘eat your greens’ blues, I got the ‘eat your greens’ blues

2. When I was eighteen and courtin’ Jenny-Lou,
An uptown stunner but a vegan through and through,
She took me to ‘Dos Gringo’s’ with a twinkle in her eye,
“Don’t eat your broccoli, then you get no apple pie”.

3. On reaching’ two score I weighed two forty-four
Couldn’t play baseball with my kids any more,
My wife she said ol’ KFC’s surely took its toll,
“Don’t eat your cabbage, , then you get no jelly roll.

4. Got my five a day at sixty, just to pass the time,
Three double bloody Marys’ and two triple gin and lime,
My physio she pulled me up, and said “For heaven’s sake,
Don’t eat your carrots, , I’ll be comin’ to your wake“.

5. All through my life I been chibbed about my weight,
Next Wednesday week I’ll be pushin’ eighty eight,
The nurses in the home, they all tryin’ to make me slimmer,
“Don’t eat your sprouts then we’ll confiscate your zimmer”.
