Eddie Keher Poem by Francis Duggan

Eddie Keher

In Kilkenny's black and amber a legendary name
The hurler from Inistioge who hurled his way to fame
The renowned Eddie Keher he rates amongst hurling's best
He never was found wanting when he was put to the test.

One of the greatest ever to swing a hurley stick
Deadly around the goal square so classy and so quick
Five all stars and six All Ireland medals that does seem a proud boast
Of many a Kilkenny hurling victory Eddie Keher was the toast.

His two goals and eleven points in Croke Park stands as a record score
In the All Ireland final of 1971 something never done before
And that was with a beaten side an amazing display
From him of stick-work and of accuracy on that September day.

So jubilant in victory and gracious in defeat
A quiet and down to earth man untainted by conceit
In the skilful game of hurling he was a marvellous player
And in the sixties with Tipperary's legend Jimmy Doyle the limelight he did share.
