Empty Words Poem by Rainbow Cadenza

Empty Words

Rating: 4.0

Had you been God the earth would be formless,
Darkness would swirl on the face of the deep.
No light would come forth to breach the endless
Night; no sun to define day, nor stars to sweep,
Like heartbeats o'er a new -birthed firmament;
No heaven would you create, though perchance
A hell -not through malice, or ill intent,
Rather through luxury of negligence -
Where wretched wraiths as I wait stoically
Upon your utterance to bring forth life,
Holding fast to the hope that your words be
Not empty echoes, but tear like a scythe,
Through the eternal void in which we writhe.

Had you been God the earth would remain parched,
No waves would swell and surge in lunar breaths,
Though infinite tears poise to fall and arch
In streams of tortured dreams and painful deaths
Of hearts; enough to fill a million seas.
No tender shoots of green to scent the air,
Nor wind to sway with sweet accord the trees.
There would be no beasts, of feather or fur,
No creatures of hoof or claw, wing or feet.
But as from the serpent Eve took the bait
I was tempted by your promises sweet.
You are not God, your words have not the weight,
And only actions do substantiate.
