End Of An Era Poem by Gedion Onyango

End Of An Era

So now you are old
you are aged and invalid
your eyes and ears are expired
you can see us no longer.
And we’re ready to read you
YES!
Ready to write and teach your eulogy,
we’re ready with our pens and papers
to talk about you – write about you
distort or exaggerate what you did to us
how you did it
why you did it
where you did it
who you did it to
and of course – whether you did it right
YES!
We’re ready to put the last nail
upon you
upon your life
upon your casket
upon your legacy.
Your legacy is our subject
our making
and you have no choice
YES!
You can’t change our course
And now the power is in our hands
You can arrest us no longer
you can send hooded men in our houses no longer
because your time has come
YES!
So now you’re old
you are aged and dying
dying with all the deeds
both good and bad
but we’re the only ones to judge you
YES!
We can see you
and pity you,
and praise you
or loath you
whatever we write
will be you for generations!
